There are certain things I really dislike. For instance I really don’t like the fact that my hammock sags closer to the ground when I lay in it now versus last year.
Another thing I dislike is being told that my sales funnel is not constructed correctly. Odd that anyone would be told that, as there are as many versions of sales funnels as there are marketing plans.
In case you are unfamiliar with the term sales funnel, here is a simple definition: It is detailed (steps) in the sales process of your business. It is a planned approach (you created) to making a sale. It allows you to understand what is going on and to expose possible weaknesses so you can tweak the process for success.
For instance: In the month of January you had 100 visitors to your site (I’m keeping the example simple)…10 of them clicked on a products page…5 clicked on a product…1 made a purchase. That translates into a 1% conversion rate.
Take away from this that the steps you have in place are making you 1 sale for every 100 visitors. If in February you notice that your visitor rate is falling well below 100 the chances of making a sale is very very slim. On the other hand if you see that the visitor rate is pushing closer to 500 you should expect 5 sales.
Yes it’s not rocket science. Yes your sales should increase with more visitors that’s why everyone concentrates on getting traffic. So whats the point of this blog?
The point is that your sales funnel might be a little more involved then you would first think. Here are a few things you might want to consider incorporating into your marketing plan to feed the funnel.
(1) Identify where your traffic is coming from.
(2) Identify where on your site the traffic is going
(3) How long do they stay
(4) What actions do they take while they are on your site
To get this information Log in to your Google Analytics account. There is a bucket load of information there. This is a post about how to use your analytics account as there are so many paths to take.
However you should start out with recording the basic information, and you need to do this every 30 days. Every 30 days or you will end up with garbage. By doing this one step you will be able to get a clearer picture of what is happening on your site.
The basic information you should record is: # of visits, page views, pages per visits, the bounce rate, average time on the site, % new visits and the # listed in the visitor overview. Once you have these numbers you will begin to track your success in your marketing plan.
There are more reports you can access in analytics that is critical for your sales funnel. You will be able to track how your site is being found. You can begin to break down each page of your website. You will be able to see if your pages that are calling for action on the readers part, are being visited and for how long.
There is more then one way to skin a chupacabra (I would have said cat, but I don’t want to offend any reader and I think I’m safe that no one has a chupacabra as a pet). Point being you can create your own reports using analytics. Take the information and use it to tweak your site.
Your sales funnel is not like mine it is unique. However please consider the fact that we all need to be marketing our business on a consistent bases. By focusing on your sales funnel it will help you determine if your marketing plan is working.
Even affiliate marketers can benefit from understanding how a sales funnel works. So do a little research, check out what is happening on your website and do a little tweaking. Remember the work never ends, just the amount of effort.

Enough of this silliness. You have all seen ads similar to this before. Sad thing is they work. Folks line up to plop their hard earned coin down. The good news however is that you can learn from their sales/landing pages.
Any Internet page could be labeled a landing page if it directs the visitor to do something. Notice I didn’t say it make a sale.
You have an Affiliate Website how do you get folks to click on the ads? Again I didn’t say make a sale. It is up to the Affiliates to convert the visit into a sale. But you have to get them there so lets discuss the items you find on a sales/landing page and see if those ideas can be used.
A rule in marketing and sales is to keep the message simple. You want the visitor to feel at ease on your website. How do you do that?
(1) Keep the website clean and clutter free.
Now I have talked about this many times. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Just because you are techie enough to load up your site with video’s, music, banners and perhaps every 5th word exploding into butterflies….doesn’t mean you should. Unless you really don’t care about making sales.
Notice I listed Video’s and Banners in the list. I’m not suggesting you don’t use these two items. Not at all. Video’s in very selected instances could be a great asset. However most folks who are building websites affiliate or not fall for the dribble that you must use them.
Banners are still touted as the next best thing to slice bread, yet it is proven that readers have banner blindness. The question then becomes why would you add them? to make it worse some “experts” preach that the banners should be at the top of the page…that’s just plain nuts!
(2) An Affiliate web site relies upon providing information.
That means the content you create (underscore the word YOU) must be interesting, informative and directed towards the reader. In my humble opinion you are not standing behind a pulpit preaching down to folks. Don’t frame your content so it comes across like (hey dummy you really need to understand this and by the way you better click on my ads). Remember your reader and you are having a one on one conversation, treat it that way.
(3) Keeping it real above the fold.
What does that mean? Above the fold is an old newspaper term. The important stories are always printed above the fold (so folks wouldn’t have to unfold the paper). It is meant to grab the readers attention.
That is why you create your article in such a way that the main points are spelled out first. Grab their attention, create interest so your reader will continue through the article and the rest of your ads.
Should you have an Ad above the fold…darn right you should.
(4) Ad placement.
I said earlier that the “experts” preach banners. I will suggest to you that Text Ads work a whole lot better especially if you use your content to walk them into the ad. make the text ad part of the content. That helps keep the page simple and clean. If done correctly you could list a few general benefits of the advertisers product before the reader reaches the link.
Example: Say you have a site about pets. The article is about pet care. The sentence leading up to and including the ad might read like this, ” Keeping your pets coat healthy and tangle free is easily accomplished when you use pet conditioners from (add the text ad here).
(5) Build trust.
Seems like a no brainer, if the visitor feels comfortable on your site and they perceive that it can be trusted, your half way to making money.
Funny thing this trust. I was reading an article written by a “Guru” who was taking about trust. One of his ideas was to place a personal picture on the site to show folks that there is a person behind the site. Then he quickly added don’t use your picture choose a free one from the Internet. He was talking about building trust, he just doesn’t know what it is. By the way do not add your picture to your Affiliate website.
Just don’t say anything on your web site that is not true. Don’t say the product is great if you never used it. Don’t try to be an over the top salesperson, you don’t have to be.
Your web site doesn’t need to look all glitz and glamour….just real.
These were just a few ideas I wanted to pass on to perhaps help you past the road block to making money through the use of Affiliate Marketing.
Learn MoreJust about everyone has heard the terms Blog, blogger and blogging. You yourself might even be a blogger so what I am about to say may surprise you.
Many many many folks do not understand what a blog is, how it works or what you do! Yes I’m afraid they do not appreciate your art. How could they?
They feel that a blogger is someone who sits around in their underwear spouting off ideas they want the entire world to hear. Because they sit all day in front of a computer Bloggers have no life therefore they must be Geeks. In their free time they sit around playing computer games while sucking down junk food. After all….. writing a Blog isn’t like working.
How wrong those misinformed folks are. Sure we do dress casually ( face it we can). Yes we do want to communicate our ideas to the world (because the world really needs to hear us). Are we really Geeks? Maybe but since when is being a Geek a bad thing? After all a Geek is assumed to be intelligent (and we humbly admit we are). Not all of us sit around playing computer games (we could) and since when are hot pockets (my favorite) labeled as junk food. Now don’t even get me started about what we do with our blog as not working.
Now that we are finished answering the misinformed lets talk about you, your Internet Business and your blog.
If you do not blog your Internet Business will suffer. Your business might even die because you are not taking advantage of a great tool which has the ability to draw in traffic.
Your blog can and should earn you money. Heck your blog can become your Internet Business. So lets address your attitude towards being a blogger and working on your blog.
First if you have read this Blog in the past you may be aware of two major points
(A) I advocate doing all you can for free. Do not pay for services that all the experts claim you must (this goes against the Guru mentality).
(B) There is nothing for sale on this Blog. There is a place for AdSense….nothing there. There are no advertisers listed here. My decision for doing this goes against the experts (in this case they are correct) IF I wanted to make money with this blog….I don’t.
The reason I bring this to your attention is to show that I am making a business decision not to make money from this blog. Because of that business decision it draws clients to me and I’m able to keep the lights on. Also I have no product to promote here (except me) so my views are my own. This allows me to be free to support or trash any product I see fit.
Now for you….
If you are in business then your goal is to make money not spend it. To do that you must be serious about what you are doing. Your blog is a business not a hobby or some cool thing you are doing. Think business. Enjoy business. Act business.
Before you start a blog have a plan. Understand how to create the blog so that it gets the message out. Understand how blogging works. Realize that if you don’t set it up correctly you will not get the traffic you want. Decide how much time and effort you are willing to put into it.
Don’t for a moment think you will be an over night success. Wait…I’m wrong you will be an over night success. What we don’t know is how many nights it will take.
Don’t listen to the Guru’s hype about quantity of posts. This is your Blog just concentrate on quality always quality. Do this one thing and you will improve your chances to succeed.
I did mention that blogging is work but it deserves to be mention one last time in this post. It takes work to get it off the ground. Then it takes more work to keep it flying.
Keep your blog real. Don’t knowingly misinform folks. But know your market and meet their needs. Simple business practices 101
Develop a marketing plan and work it (oops said I wasn’t going to use that W word again) OK deploy your plan. Conquer the different areas in Social Marketing that you need. Take the high ground and push forward never slowing down.
When writing your posts, just be who you are. Don’t try to write in a style that is not you. It is you that the folks will buy into. It’s how you present things that folks will buy into. just be yourself.
To wrap this up…you need to blog. Once you start you’ll get hooked. I can’t imagine not blogging. It isn’t always fun or easy and at times you wonder if it will pay off.
Just have faith in yourself and remember doing business in the Internet World is war. In my opinion you have no choice, blog or die.
Would like to hear from you.
Learn MoreWarning this is not a typical blog post for the new year. You will not hear me talk about resolutions (because I never have any). You will not see a list of the 10 most brilliant things I have accomplished this year (my family told me that if I take some liberties I could stretch my list to maybe 3). You will not see a list of bone head moves (according to my loved ones I would have to start a series of posts to make sure I cover that topic well). I am not going to write about how much I appreciate you the reader and or my clients because that is not my style. Besides, that should be apparent.
No my friends (see I like you) today the topic will be suggestions you might want to consider as you create or improve your business plan. I can assure you there are no brilliant never before seen or heard “secrets” presented here today. No just some ideas to get the grey matter started.
Hint if you are in a business, you should have both short and long range goals as well as a plan to reach those goals. You should also have a way to measure the success of your plan.
For instance with every new project I have a 30 and a 90 day plan. I follow that up with a yearly and a five year plan. Each are connected and benefit from each other. Each part of the plan’s results are based is based on very pessimistic forecast.
That’s right I think in the worst of terms (cup always half full) but I always plan for the best. I assure you I have very realistic goals but then I cut the possible results in half. (I don’t recommend anyone use my logic) But I digress from the subject at hand, so a few quick thoughts to ponder leading up to creating your business plan.
(1) Never underestimate the power of the Chill. When you are in the process of working your Internet business there will come a point where you will hit the Wall. Now runners understand this concept very well…breaking through that wall is a rush.
My friends your goal is to experience that rush. It breaths new life into you, which will allow you to have a clear view of your business efforts. To break through the wall you will have to push yourself mentally and at times it’s not very pleasant. You will (really you will) have to prepare yourself for the push. How?
Well you have to clear your head from time to time so turn off your computer,(that’s right step away from the machine) leave your desk and do something out of the ordinary. By out of the ordinary might I suggest you engage a new activity every week. If not every week then take a few days every month and engage life. Become well rounded, experience terror (whitewater rafting is my adrenaline shot)…it’s refreshing.
OK perhaps not terror. Just engage your mind elsewhere you will enjoy it and it does make you mentally stronger. It’s like hanging a room deodorizer in your brain.
(2) Remember your passion. Do not get distracted while you are working the business. Stay focused with your plan. In the Internet world there are tons of folks shouting at you trying to convince you that they have a better idea. They want you to believe that your way is (gasp) wrong.
They benefit from your doubts so they can get you to waver and stray off the path. Which means that you might stop your plan and follow them…for a price. The result is that you continue to change your business plan over and over and You end up going nowhere.
Bottom line be passionate about your plan. Review it yes but believe in it.
(3) Be flexible. So far we have suggested that you relax and embrace your passion for what you are doing. Translated that means be flexible. (But you might suggest… being flexible means changing what you are doing)
Being flexible means you are able to adjust to the landscape around you. It means you are able to review what you are doing and adjust to it…not totally change your direction.
Alright now for the meat and potatoes of your business plan for your Internet business.
I already stated that you need business goals but how do you set them?
(A) Make a list of the sites assets. Does it have:
(1) Google AdSense
(2) Google Analytics
(3) Amazon Stores
(4) Affiliate products
(5) Are the products from a drop shipper
(6) Are you the product supplier
(7) Does your site have a Blog
Alright I think you get that idea
(B) List the negatives. Yes you created the business but look for its weaknesses and cracks. If you look hard enough you will find them. Finding them is exciting because you can fix them before any real damage occurs.
(C) What monthly costs do you have? If you set the business up correctly your monthly costs should be very low (about the cost for a dinner for two…and not at a fast food place)..$50.00 bucks tops.
Hint…Your budget does not include paying for extra services that everyone says you need. It does not include getting additional “expert” help..say for marketing. Once your site is up you CAN DO the rest.
(D) How much time do you have to spend every week…repeat every week working the business? If you have a real job (did you see the Guru’s eyebrows go up?) then count on spending about 8 to 10 hours a week in the beginning. As you get good at what you do that time can be reduced.
(E) List your expectations. In other words how much money do you think you can generate in the first 30 days. If you wrote zero…you would be correct. Set your expectations low but your goals high.
The reality is that it really takes time to start making money. Be prepared for that but set your sites high and you will work to that level.
A real life example:
Business A sales were X$ the first year pretty good in my mind…but not enough
The second year sales increased by $100,000.00 over the first year I was not satisfied because I thought it should have been better.
The 3ed year sales increase $135,000.00 over the second year….I was happy but I still felt it should have been better.
Year 4 sales was a lousy $75,000.00 over year 3. I felt I had failed….until I took a step back and realized how much sales had increased over the last few years.
The moral of this example. Set your sites high work hard to achieve them and even if you fall short, look back and see how far you have come.
OK to create the plan, take all your information sit down and start writing it. (I like stating the obvious). For instance:
I will make x amount in Google AdSense in the next 90 days. I will check and record my Analytics every 30 days. I will sign up with x amount of directories every week. I will work at getting back links, explore and engage in every aspect of social media…etc. In other words decide how to bring traffic to your site.
Don’t forget to spend time working on your site…explore your Analytics, take that information analyze it and apply it to improving your site.
Some Plan Tips:
(1) Physically write down your business plan…don’t type it, write it down in a business journal (a notepad). If you want to type it up later fine…but actually taking pencil to paper makes it real. Try it.
(2) Create a Marketing Journal…use it. Make a list of what you accomplished that day to market your site. A Marketing Plan is part of your business plan..a large part. However it is a beast unto itself so you must rule it. If you haven’t written a marketing plan…get to it.
(3) Keep your plan simple. It becomes easier to understand and easier to execute. It becomes easier to measure.
(4) Treat your plan like a chess match. Try to see at least two moves ahead. Remember that your goal is to win. If your goal is not to win..not to defeat everyone in your market…why then are you here?
There are more details to your business plan to discuss, then we have room for here. Remember there are no secrets to a good plan.
Just use common sense when you create it. When you work it and you find yourself coming against the wall, remember this “They say that being able to work is a blessing.” So stop for a spell and count your blessings….it works.
Like to hear your comments.
Learn MoreIt’s that time of the year when all the pundits pull out their crystal ball and predict what the new year will be like. Folks just normally like to hear all about that stuff. I however have a slight problem. You see when I went to the crystal ball store to get mine, there was only one left.
It should have been a red flag when they offered it to me for 88% off. But I guess I was just so excited to get a great deal that I never questioned it.
Well I rushed home fired that puppy up and (jaw drop here) it didn’t work like advertised. Sounds like some of those program offers you find on the internet.
I did say it didn’t work as advertised but it did work. Instead of looking into the future like you would expect…it looks into the past!
At first I thought (bummer) but after devouring my second hot pocket I realized this could be a good deal after all. Looking back and seeing all the things you should not have done and didn’t could be the positive reinforcement you need. Who couldn’t use a pat on the back every now and then?
So grab a beverage, sit back and relax as we rewind last year.
Last year you started your Internet Business or Blog and here are a number of things you didn’t do…which was a great.
YOU DIDN”T…..
1) Write articles or blog posts less then 300 words
2) Try to use more then 1 keyword phrase per article
3) Pay for Directory submissions
4) Pay for back links
5) Fall for the sites that promised thousands of visitors to your site
6) Believe that you couldn’t do Social Marketing on your own
7) Believe all the folks who said you couldn’t create a website
Pay for advertising because you know it can be done for free
9) Fill your site with tons of pictures, videos and banner ads
10) Quit!
11) Try to scam Google with things like the “unnatural” Link Wheel
12) Look for the fast and easiest way to cut corners (because they don’t work)
I’m done! I’m through looking into that crystal ball. The more I look the more I see the more I understand just how good you are. You don’t really need me to tell you that.
Next week will be in a new year and for most of us another chance to build our internet business. Next week for others will be a chance to begin their internet career and perhaps they will run across this post and wonder if what they don’t do will be as important as what they do.
Folks it’s been a great year and I wish you all a Happy New Year….just keep thise cards and letters coming in.
Learn MoreEveryone is talking about Social Media as if it were a nice tidy package wrapped with brightly colored paper and topped with a big bow. (two days before Christmas what do you expect)
At first blush it does seem that way until the Guru Grinch’s attempt to snatch it away from you tearing and ripping until the contents are spewed across the Internet. Why oh why do they do such things?
Could it be they are lonely and they crave your attention? You know it does get cold, windy and miserable sitting all alone atop those mountains. So what better way to get noticed then to insist that creating and running an Internet Business is difficult. But we digress, back to the Social Media package.
Once you open the package you discover what looks like a 10,000 piece puzzle with no flat edge pieces to help get you started. (The Grinch’s are smiling). However do not worry because what you see is not real. Its that Grinch magic that is clouding your vision.
Sure there are many pieces to Social Media but (grab that cup of special egg-nog) you control how the pieces of the puzzle go together. Yup! Social Media is made up of free flowing shape shifting flexible pieces that you control. (The Grinch’s have quit smiling)
All you need to do, is to not be, dazzled by the bright twinkling lights, the festive glass ornaments and all the shiny tinsel. All you need to understand is that you are in control. Below I have listed some of the mainstays of Social Media for you to compare as you decide how to proceed in your marketing.
By the way everyone of these Social Media Types is Free. You do not have to pay to play.
Rating…. A
Blogs…. There are two types of Blogs…Yours and theirs and both can work for you. Your blog is your chance to supply great lively content, buckets of information and easy linking to where ever you wish your guest to go.
You visiting their blogs (other blogs in similar markets) and leaving links back to you. This works great if you do it correctly.
Rating….B+
Social Networks (Like Facebook)….Huge potential market that just expands and expands, provided your comments are not like the Avon Lady who lives next door. You know the type. Every time she sees you she asks you to buy something. Success here is never ask someone to buy…just entice them to your site.
Rating….B
Forums…. It’s all about the Q&A. Forums are platforms for question that as a member you get to answer. It does not allow you to promote your site with a link nor are you able to suggest you have a site. But it does allow folks to view your profile. The overlooked bonus and why I have rated it so high is because it gives you up to the minute insights as to what folks are asking. Potential customers are asking questions in forums, use that information to your advantage. Your fingers are on the pulse of your market.
Rating….C
Twitter….is a lot like fishing. You cast out your comments and hope for the best. Many folks deem this as true social marketing but ask yourself at 144 characters is it really social. But it does work its fast and its easy.
Rating….C-
Linkeden….not an area you might consider for Social Media but it is in the package. Most folks go there to become connected. Business to business or to find a job etc. What might surprise you is the wealth of information that is floating around the site. Plus you have a chance to express yourself and establish yourself as an authority.
Rating….D
YouTube….Don’t believe all the hype about how great this Social media format is. Can it bring folks to your site, yes if you can create a fresh clever video. Placing it on your site…not the best idea but hey folks do it all the time…myself it will be a blue moon indeed before you see one on any website I have.
Well that about wraps up my rating of some of the mainstays of Social Media. I would love to hear from you especially those of you who disagree.
Have a Merry Christmas!
Learn MoreEveryone in this business has an opinion about social marketing so along the way some of those opinions were labeled myths. The reason they were labeled as myths…they went against the experts intentions. Almost everyone wants to capitalize on your lack of knowledge. The less you know the more they can make.
I have talked about this before. Anything that is being done to create or promote an Internet Business is just too difficult for those of you newbies. That’s right. The greatest Myth that is being fostered upon you is that you can’t create or run an internet business on your own.
Quick Tip…..you can do it.
Does it help to have someone who has been through the learning curve helping you? Of course it does only the truly naive would think other wise. Getting help is one thing being taken for a ride is quite another.
Today we are going to have some fun and disagree with the experts who agree with the myths.
Myth 1. Get involved in social marketing only if you have enough money and time to do it correctly. If you don’t you will just muck things up.
BUSTED….The assumption here is that you who are just starting out are not qualified. That if you can’t do it correctly you shouldn’t be in the game. Really? Lucky for you that common sense is something you posses. If you don’t try you will never fail which means you will never learn and will never be successful. By the way is there a guarantee that you will fail….nope.
Myth 2. (My favorite) You must spend money to be successful in social marketing.
BUSTED….You never have to spend a dime on social marketing. (That should make the wind blow up some gurus sheet) You can do everything for free once you understand social marketing..and you can with some research. Now in fairness there is the argument that you have to spend time doing this…and as everyone knows time is money. Common sense again folks….you are always the cheapest labor you will ever find.
Myth 3. Adults never use Facebook so it isn’t a serious avenue for social marketing.
BUSTED….Buckets and buckets of adults do use Facebook..true most of us don’t care about Uncles Harry cat or other such dribble. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t promote your internet business there. No just the opposite. You want to be there, you want to talk about your business, you want to reach out to those millions of folks on Facebook. What you don’t want to do is become the lady next store who sells Avon products and pesters you to buy something every time you come into view.
Quick Tip….Don’t try to sell products on Facebook..keep it social.
Myth 4. Twitter is the greatest asset to social marketing ever and you need to tweet at least 8 times a day.
BUSTED….I make no bones about this but I must be the only person who doesn’t see Twitter as a great social marketing tool….check out my post about Twitter. However I do agree that you should use it with no worries. It’s free and it’s just like fishing. Throw out your tweets into the twitter stream with different baits and see what happens. The 8 or 10 or 12 times a day are just numbers that (Gurus) have chosen to help you decide that it might be a little much for you to do. Answer (per them)…just pay us and we will do it for you.
Myth 5. You won’t be able to cover all the social medias but we can.
BUSTED….Quick answer is that you can cover all the major areas of social marketing. You can do it well and at no cost to you. Again the argument is that there is just too much to do and you will become overwhelmed. So don’t…don’t become overwhelmed. Just pick and choose those areas where you can do well in and just do it. There isn’t a business on the planet that can do all areas of marketing well…so why should you. Be realistic…because that make sense.
Myth 6. By using social marketing you will get tons of traffic quickly.
BUSTED….No way…no chance…flat out wrong. Social marketing takes time. How much time? That depends on a bunch of factors that differ from internet businesses, but let’s put on the common sense hat again. Experience will tell you that 30 days of marketing would be the bare bones minimum before any results would be detected. Social marketing is long range. You are building relationships and campaigns that need time to take root and mature.
Quick Tip….Don’t fall for anyone or any program that offers a quick result. It doesn’t happen in the brick and mortar world and it won’t work in the internet world as well.
Social marketing…is easy..it’s free and it’s rewarding once you understand it. Understanding it just takes some time and effort on your part. If you have some questions just email me and let’s get you over some of the bumps.
